The Submerged Crocodile

My most adventurous trip was my visit to Belize where we trekked through the dense jungles and climbed the tall Incan ruins. Belize is a country in Central America sandwiched between the Caribbean ocean to the east and dense jungles to the west.

Our journey started with a one hour ride on a motor boat to Lamani (The Submerged Crocodile). Once we arrived, we set off on foot for a one mile walk through mosquito infested terrains in over 100 degree weather. As we made our way through the jungle our guide pointed out a plant that he claims to be the cure for certain cancers.

As we arrived at our first location, our guide pointed out a boulder carved into a round stone that he says the ancient Incan used to tell time. At each stop the ruins grew larger and larger until we made it to the sacred temple. Amani’s High Temple is believed to be over 2000 years old. The temple was used for Mayan religious ceremonies. Once we arrived to the temple, we were tasked with climbing to the top, a 108 ft climb.

The climb was to the top was long and strenuous. As we got closer to the top the sun grew larger. The old stone steps were worn down by time and the harsh Belizean weather.  As we got higher the steps became steeper, causing some of the tourist to lose their footing or turn back all together. Making it to the top was the greatest achievement I had ever made and at that moment I felt like the Incan priest must of felt beholding his Kingdom.
